The Foster Children
of
Alexander and Eliza Jones Fulton
We have very limited information about the numerous children said to have made their homes with Alexander and Eliza Jones Fulton, and the names of only five :
MORRIS FULTON (birth name unknown).
In 1951 in conversation with Susan Fulton Welty, Eliza "Lila" Fulton Morrissey remembered Morris Fulton as "no good". He married and lived in Ottumwa, but the Fulton family had nothing to do with him after he left the Fulton home.
MARY H. BROWN
In Jefferson County marriage records we find this information:
26 February 1880 - Robert L. Perry married Mary H. Brown; testis Morris Fulton; at house of Alexander Fulton. John Haynes, M. E. Minister.
ANNA MARIA MYERS
In Jefferson county marriage records we find this information:
20 September 1849 - Mr. Samuel Jacobs, aged 28 years and Miss Anna Maria Myers, aged 22 years, at the house of Alexander Fulton in said county.
This Samuel Jacobs was the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad manager, and Charles Jacobs Fulton (Gen. 6) was named for him. The Jacobs had two daughters, one of whom they named Eliza in honor of Eliza Jones.
ELLEN BROWN
J. W. Fulton mentions Ellen Brown in his memories of the foster children of Alexander Fulton and Eliza Jones. It is possible that she and Mary Brown were the same person, or perhaps sisters. We do know from Stever family records that the John Wesley Stever, who brought Ellen great big apples, never married.
SADIE HETZ
The only information we have about Sadie Hetz comes from Eliza "Lila" Fulton Morrissey: "My grandparents [Alexander and Eliza Jones Fulton] took her out of jail and she lived with them. We were great friends when I was young. Sadie had the front room upstairs and we would eat cucumbers there at night! Sadie got angry with Grandmother Fulton once, and I can still see her after the quarrel standing by her big bureau, cracking nuts with her teeth. The next day she was gone. They never saw or heard from her again."
