Joseph Warren's History

  1. JOSEPH WARREN FULTON, the third child of ALEXANDER and ELIZA JONES FULTON was born in Delaware County, Ohio, 6 May 1833.

  2. In the Spring of 1843, JOSEPH WARREN FULTON moved from Delaware County, Ohio to Fairfield, Iowa Territory with his parents, ALEXANDER and ELIZA JONES FULTON, his sister, MARTHA AMELIA, and his brothers, ROBERT J., GILBERT LAFAYETTE and WILLIAM C.

  3. From 1850 until 1866, JOSEPH WARREN FULTON carried the United States mail between Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa and Bloomfield, Davis County, Iowa.

  4. During 1853 and 1854, JOSEPH WARREN FULTON led a group of government officials touring Kansas and Nebraska researching the Indian situation in that area.

  5. JOSEPH WARREN FULTON married SARAH ELIZABETH MINEAR 9 March 1858 near Chillicothe, Ohio.

  6. JOSEPH WARREN and SARAH ELIZABETH MINEAR FULTON were the parents of seven children, all of whom were born in Delaware County, Ohio:

    CHARLES JACOBS (1860 - 1937)
    WILL ALEXANDER (1862 - 1937)
    PEARL LOYAL (1864 - 1934)
    ALBERT MINEAR (1867 - 1932)

    ELIZA (1875 - 1964)


  7. JOSEPH WARREN FULTON was born with a malformed left hand which prevented his participation in the Civil War.

  8. JOSEPH WARREN and SARAH ELIZABETH MINEAR FULTON and their six living children, CHARLES JACOBS, WILL ALEXANDER, PEARL LOYAL, ALBERT MINEAR, JOSEPH WARREN, JR. and ELIZA resided on a farm in Des Moines township, Jefferson County, Iowa.

  9. JOSEPH WARREN FULTON was one of the original promoters of the Iowa State Fair at Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa.

  10. On 20 October 1864, JOSEPH WARREN FULTON bought at public auction sixty seven acres off of the East side of the South one-half of the Northeast Quarter of Section 5, Township 70 (Village) in Van Buren county, Iowa at a price of $351.75.

  11. Between 1870 and 1875, JOSEPH WARREN FULTON raised 70 varieties of rye, oats and wheat, 30 varieties of other grain and field seeds, 53 varieties of corn and 250 varieties of vegetable and garden seeds for exhibit at the 1876 United States Centennial celebration in Philadephia, Pennsylvania.

  12. In 1875, JOSEPH WARREN FULTON joined the Western Wheeled Scraper Works of Aurora, Illinois. He had charge of the territory extending from Iowa to Texas and from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. He also traveled overseas for the company.

  13. In 1876, JOSEPH WARREN FULTON was commissioned as Assistant Manager at the Centennial, (of the United States) representing the agricultural producers of Iowa.

  14. On 21 January 1882, JOSEPH WARREN FULTON bought the East half of the South half of the Southwest quarter of section 33, Township 72, Range 11 W. in Jefferson County, Iowa.

  15. In 1888, JOSEPH WARREN and SARAH ELIZABETH MINEAR FULTON moved back to the original ALEXANDER FULTON homestead one mile west of Fairfield.

  16. On 15 December 1888, JOSEPH WARREN and SARAH ELIZABETH MINEAR FULTON sold to their son, Pearl Loyal Fulton, forty four acres off of the West side of the West half of the Northwest quarter of Section 4, Township 70, Range 11; and also the Southeast quarter of the Northeast quarter of Section 5, Township 70, Range 11 of Van Buren County for $3000 in advancement from JOSEPH WARREN FULTON of PEARL LOYAL FULTON'S share of JOSEPH WARREN FULTON'S estate.

  17. In the late winter of 1894, JOSEPH WARREN FULTON represented Western Wheeled Scraper Co. at the California Midwinter Exposition in San Francisco, following the Exposition he sailed to Japan, where he had an audience with the Emperor and received a cane as a gift from the Emperor. This cane is now in the Frederic Caroll and Rosa Alice McCoy Fulton Museum in Jefferson County, Iowa.

  18. At unspecified dates prior to 1900, we know that JOSEPH WARREN FULTON owned the following additional land:
    In township 71 of Jefferson county, Iowa:
    1. North 61 acres of the West half of the Northeast quarter of section 4, Range 10 W.
    2. South half of the Southeast quarter of section 15, Range 11 W.
    3. East half of the Northeast quarter of the Southeast quarter of section 15, Range 11 W.

    In township 72 of Jefferson county, Iowa:
    1. East 24 acres of the Southwest quarter, section 33, Range 10 W.
    2. Southeast quarter of section 33, Range 10 W. Northwest quarter of the Southwest quarter of section 34, Range 10 W.

  19. JOSEPH WARREN FULTON was a member of Jefferson Lodge, No. 4, I.O.O.F., Fairfield, Iowa.

  20. Early in May 1903, JOSEPH WARREN FULTON returned in ill health to Fairfield, Iowa, from Texas where he had been visiting his son J.W. Jr.

  21. On 13 May 1903, JOSEPH WARREN FULTON drew a contract providing for the division of his estate, at the time of his death, among four of his five living sons. The 40 acres which were the original ALEXANDER FULTON homestead were to become the property of his daughter,ELIZA FULTON, and the fifth son, ALBERT MINEAR FULTON, was to receive a cash settlement.

  22. JOSEPH WARREN FULTON died in Fairfield, Iowa,
    5 August 1903 at the home of his son CHARLES JACOBS FULTON.

  23. JOSEPH WARREN FULTON is buried in the 2nd Addition, number .062 of Evergreen Cemetery, Fairfield, Iowa.
