Robert J. FultonGeneration 5Historical Notes
Alexander Fulton, Eliza Jones Fulton and four of their children are buried in the West half of Lot # 52 of the Old Fairfield Cemetery , Fairfield, Iowa. There is one large tombstone, #492, bearing the following inscriptions: There are also five small stones bearing the names Alexander, Robert, William, Martha A. and Gilbert to designate the individual grave sites. In 1994 the carving on the large tombstone was barely legible. We do not know why Eliza's name is not included on the large stone or one of the small stones. Cemetery records indicate that she is buried beside Alexander. Also, please note that four of the five Fulton children died within a four years and two months time span, and William and Robert died just two and a half months apart.
The following letter was written to Robert J. Fulton on the 5th of March 1850 by his cousin, E. T. Jones, from Chillicothe, Ohio: [Spelling and punctuation are that of the original.]
March 5th 1850
Dear Cousin Your kind communication was duly received and it was with the greatest pleasure that I perused it. I saw the letter you sent to Marley but I will not quarrell with you about wrieting to him first as I thought you had a notion to answer his part of the first for as I never got a letter from you I was not expecting one. I expressed some desire to go to Iowa if I had an oportunity. I would like very much to go but I do not want you to come here on purpose for me for perhaps I could not go but I think you might come anyhow. I should like to see you very much and so would all your relations here. I thank you very much for your kindness in offering to pay my Transportation to Iowa. I have no doubt but your folks would be as kind to me as I could wish but I am afraid I would get homesick. I was in Winchester at my grandfathers about five months last winter and spring and I got so home sick I could not stay any longer and I would not expect to come home that soon were I to go Iowa. I am hardly ever at home but never go so far but what I can come home when ever I want to. our folks talk of coming to Iowa next fall if we all live and keep our health and nothing happens . if we go anyways near you I think I will come and live with your Mother that is if she wants me to for I always thought a great deal of your mother and I expect I would of all the Family if I was acquainted with them. I cannot remember anything about you. our Family are all well at present and I hope these few scrarols may find you all enjoying the same blessing. I am sorry to hear that you are in poor healh but Robert do not give way to melancoly for that is worst thing you could do to just give up and think you are sick you will be sure to be worse than you realy are. I think a trip to Ohio would be very good for your healh. though I expect you know best. we have not heard from grandfather Jones for sometime but I suppose he is well or we would have heard of him. Your aunt Nancy (Ann Nancy Fulton Immel) has been sick but is better I saw the girls at singing school last monday night they looked as spry as crickets and Claracy [Clarissa Immell] had a beaux a chool Teacher that taught chool in there disrict this winter. I expect she would be mad if she knew I told you but it was so funny to se her have a beaux and her sisters none that I could not help telling you her mother says she expects Claracy will be married before any of them. [Clarissa was the youngest sister, but not the first married] Your uncle James [James Fulton, the third] started for Iowa last thursday and your cousin Jim [James Immel Fulton] expects to start abot the midle of this month. [James Immel Fulton would have been about nine years old] I have writen enough foolishness. I know you will laugh at this letter I cant write much no time and to day is so cold I have to write with my gloves on. I like to receive letters but I do like answer them for I cannot Compose one fit for any person to see it. I would I should like to write letters. I hope you will excuse this and write again as soon as convienent. the Family all send their love to you and your Father's "Family" give my love Mother and all the Family. no more at present I remain you Cousin R.J. Fulton E T Jones (We do not know who E.T. Jones was)
