This is a copy of a typewritten letter from Charles Jacobs Fulton (Gen.6), son of Joseph Warren and Sarah Elizabeth Minear Fulton, to Cleora Fulton Payzant (Gen.6), daughter of John Ignatius and Margaret A. Elliott Fulton.

September 25, 1932

Mrs. Cleora Payzant,
Gandview, Washington, R#2.

Dear Mrs. Payzant:

I delayed replying to your letter in an effort to obtain some additional information. I'm afraid I'm not able to help you much. I have tried to trace our line back to the beginning in this country, but I have had little success.

The head of our branch of the Fulton famiy as traditions has it was James Fulton, who came from Glasgow, Scotland, to Pennsylvania and settled in Huntingdon county. He married Ann Greene [note: this was a name error that caused a great deal of confusion until we obtained proof that Ann's name was Christopher, not Greene.] In 1807, they moved to Baltimore, and in 1814 to Ross county, Ohio. He died in Chillicothe.

I'm uncertain about the children. I know there were five, and there may have been more. Those I am sure of were James, William, Alexander, Robert and Ann. James was your grandfather, Alexander, my grandfather.

James, born November 5, 1799, married Rebecca Green, who came from Wheeling, Virginia. She was born January 14, 1800. Their children were:

Alexander R. born October 11, 1825;
Andrew and Elleneor Ann, twins, born October 21, 1827;
Orlando, born July 11, 1829;
John I., born June 11, 1831;
Charles D., born September 1, 1833;
Rachael Ann, born September 14, 1835;
Rebecca Ann, born August 12, 1837;
Sarah E., born January 12, 1839;
James I., born May 15, 1841;
Robert G., born April 30, 1843.

John I., your father, I remember very well. A daughter of his sister Elleneor Ann, Mrs. Florence N. (Corry) Gage lives in Fairfield. A son of James I. lives in Ottumwa.

The descendants of the collateral branches would make a long list. I've just tried to trace your own line.

I have no dates on the first James. His Wife Ann is buried in the Fairfield cemetery. The tombstone states she died on May 20, 1857, aged 91 years.

I often played with your brother Orlando, but after he went west, I lost track of him. Is he still living, and if so what is his address. I would like to hear from him.

Sincerely yours,
Charles J. Fulton
