A corrected spelling of Mary Coalman's name, a corrected listing of the children born to William and Mary Coalman Fulton, and birth, marriage and death dates are from the William and Mary Coalman Fulton family Bible, which has been most graciously returned to our family by Mrs. Peggy Walker and her grandson, Shaun Hurley.

WILLIAM FULTON was born 17 September 1787 in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, the first child of
JAMES (Gen.3) and
ANN CHRISTOPHER FULTON.

According to his obituarty, WILLIAM FULTON was married in Ross County, Ohio in 1803. This is probably a printing error...he would have been only 16 at that time. WILLIAM FULTON and
MARY COALMAN
were married 12 January 1813.

WILLIAM FULTON apparently did not move to Baltimore, Maryland with the rest of the family in 1807.

WILLIAM FULTON enlisted at Chillicothe, Ohio and served from 14 September 1812 until 14 October 1812 in the War of 1812 as a private in the Ohio Militia, under Captain Henry Brush.

According to his obituary, WILLIAM FULTON served in the Maneely's Rangers and was involved in the battle of Thames when Chief Tecumseh was killed.

WILLIAM FULTON was honorably discharged at "Urbanna in the Wilderness" in October 1812.

WILLIAM FULTON again served in the War of 1812 from 28 July 1813 until 17 August 1813 as a private in Captain John Eutrican's company of the Ohio Militia.

WILLIAM and MARY COALMAN FULTON moved to Iowa Territory, prior to 1850, probably in 1842.

WILLIAM FULTON'S obituary indicates that he was the father of ten children. However, in the WILLIAM and MARY COALMAN FULTON family Bible we find the names and birth dates of twelve children:

the son listed above as DANIEL is referred to as DAVID.

On page 7 of her work "The James Fulton and Related Family Histories" Marjorie Mack Oetting gives information that WILLIAM and MARY COALMAN FULTON'S marriage date was registered in an old Ross County record book along with that of
JAMES and
REBECCA FULTON, ALEX and
WILLIAM, JR. There was no date on the registration. (William and Mary had a son named Alexander, born in 1826 and James and Rebecca Green's eldest child was Alexander Robert.)

MARY COALMAN, first wife of WILLIAM FULTON, died in Wapello County, Iowa in May 1850.

In 1850 WILLIAM FULTON is found in the
Census
records in Wapello County, Iowa along with the following: ALEXANDER FULTON, DAVID FULTON, THOMAS FULTON, NANCY FULTON, HANNAH FULTON, MARILLA FULTON and WILLIAM FULTON.

WILLIAM FULTON was again married on 21 May 1851 in Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa to
MARY ANN WELLS MUNHALL.
D. N. Smith was the magistrate.

WILLIAM FULTON died 22 July 1874 and is buried in Lot #73 of the Old Fairfield City Cemetery,
tombstone # 566. His original tombstone read:
Wm. Fulton, Died July 22, 1874,
Aged 86 y. 10 m.& 3 d.
"Soldier of 1812".

WILLIAM FULTON'S original tombstone has been replaced in recent years. The present stone is at the original grave site and is inscribed:
Father, William Fulton,
Soldier of 1812.

It is possible, although not verified, that WILLIAM FULTON may have received government land in Iowa Territory as payment for his service in the War of 1812.
