ICAN Vote is a non-partisan voter mobilization project of ICAN Education Foundation. We are working in Waterloo to increase the participation and power of minority communities – especially African-Americans – in the November 7, 2006 elections. Through phone calls, mailings, media appearances, and most importantly knocking on their neighbors’ doors to have a conversation, Waterloo community leaders are engaging in a vital from of civic engagement and expanding voter turnout in their communities. Community members not only make up the core of the project’s staff, but also shape the issues and message of ICAN Vote to reflect their needs and concerns.

Building civic participation in Iowa’s politically underrepresented communities is at the very core of what we are trying to accomplish at ICAN. We will continue to build connections among our Iowa communities in order to promote electoral and legislative participation and representation. We will build a better Iowa if we all work together for what we believe in – that’s what civic engagement is all about.
