Iowa Organizations Call On Senator Grassley to Protect Medicaid From Federal Cuts
Twenty-one Iowa Organizations Demand that Grassley Use His Power on the Budget Conference Committee to Protect Medicaid from Cuts and Caps Proposed by President Bush and the House of Representatives
Des Moines/April 11 — Organizations from across the state representing hundreds of thousands of Iowans joined voices in a letter to Senator Grassley today. The groups demanded that he support the will of the Senate in the budget conference committee by ensuring that this year’s federal budget resolution contains no cuts or caps to Medicaid.
"Senator Grassley is in a powerful position to protect Medicaid from huge and unprecedented funding cuts," said Sarah Swisher, executive director of Iowa for Health Care. "Nurses, health care givers, and other Health Care Voters in Iowa call upon Senator Grassley to use his leadership to protect Iowa’s most vulnerable populations. These services are not 'optional' to the Iowans who depend on Medicaid."
Lisa Davis Cook, co-executive director of Iowa Citizen Action Network said, "Senator Grassley must stand in solidarity with Iowans against the cost shifts proposed by President Bush and the House of Representatives in their respective budgets. Our needs in Iowa will not disappear if the budget conference committee cuts or caps the federal resources available for Medicaid. The state, local communities, providers, and every Iowan will be burdened with these additional costs. Those who will lose coverage or see their services cut may pay the ultimate price with their life.
