The Iowa Citizen Action Network will host a brown bag lunch discussion in Clear Lake on July 28, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 508 2nd Ave. N. ICAN is holding the event in conjunction with Iowans United to Protect Social Security.

The group believes changes to Social Security endorsed earlier this year by the President would disproportionately affect rural Iowans. According to ICAN, rural Iowa receives 8 percent of its income from Social Security. This compares to 5 percent in Iowa's largest cities.

On the Senate side, Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley chairs the Senate Finance Committee which would control any changes to Social Security. In the House, proposed changes would come through the Ways and Means Committee and Representative Jim Nussle is a senior member of this committee.

"We want all Iowans to become educated about the proposed changes to Social Security," said Matt Russell, an organizer for Iowa Citizen Action Network. "It's even more important that rural Iowans play a role in this debate. We're encouraging participants in the discussion to contact Senator Chuck Grassley and Representative Jim Nussle who has announced his run to represent all Iowans as governor."
