Who is ducking? Congressman Jim Nussle on Social Security Privatization
Congressman Jim Nussle – Key House Ways and Means Member and Candidate for Governor – Has STILL Not Made His Position Known on Privatizing Social Security as His Own Committee Prepares to Consider Legislation
DES MOINES, IA – As this weekend marks the 70th Anniversary of the Social Security System, Iowa Citizen Action Network and Iowans United will be present at the Iowa State Fair tomorrow, Saturday, August 13th beginning at 9:00AM at the Grand Avenue entrance gate sporting a large Duck suit passing out balloons saying: “Representative Nussle – Quit Ducking! Take a Stand on Social Security Privatization.” Congressman Nussle, member of the House Ways and Means Committee and Candidate for Governor, has still not taken a position on privatizing Social Security as his committee prepares to discuss the Republican – McCrery Privatization Bill when Congress reconvenes in September.
Late last month, U.S. Rep. Jim McCrery (R-LA), Chairman of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security, introduced his long awaited legislation which raids the Social Security Trust Fund to establish private accounts. Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, Congressman Bill Thomas, has indicated that the committee with bring up the Bill in September. Nussle still has not taken a stand on privatizing Social Security.
This weekend, August 14th, marks the 70th Anniversary of the Social Security System in which the Social Security Act was signed into law by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt creating our country’s oldest safety-net providing financial security for our nation’s retired and disabled citizens. Iowa Citizen Action Network and Iowans United are planning a birthday celebration on Friday, August 19th in Waterloo, Iowa.
