the scalping process, they were cut up, and the pieces placed in pots with a quantity of corn. At the appointed time the guests were in attendance. Their national prejudices, however, induced them in partaking of the feast to prefer the venison which had also been provided for the occasion. After the feast, came the Green Corn dance, then the Medicine dance, closing during the latter part of the night with the Scalp dance. During these exercises, Kishkekosh sat with his white guests, amusing them with jokes and telling stories.

Among the anecdotes related of George Washington Kishkekosh, as the whites sometimes called him, was one which illustrates his fastidiousness in the matter of diet--a partiality which he had probably acquired by his intercourse with the whites, for cleanliness in cooking. In company with some three or four of his braves, he stopped one night at the house of a settler with whom he was on friendly terms. The party were to remain next morning for breakfast. During its preparation Kishkekosh was not an indifferent or careless observer. He noticed that his hostess neglected to wash her hands before mixing up the bread. This exhibition of untidiness was sufficient to determine the fastidious Kishkekosh to forego his breakfast until he could obtain it prepared more in accordance with his ideas of neatness. It was said that the lady was not a willing entertainer of her savage guests, and that the omission to wash her hands was probably intentional on her part. At any rate the act relieved her of them, for Kishkekosh and his followers mounted their ponies and rode a mile and a half to the house of another white settler,
