Young Davenport's first experience in active service against the Indians was in General Howard's expedition to Peoria Lake, on the Illinois River, in l812. After important service in this expedition he returned to Fort Bellefontaine, where he remained until the spring of 1814, when his regiment was ordered to join General Brown on the Canada line. The troops shipped in keel-boats down the Mississippi and up the Ohio to Pittsburgh. Thence by forced marches they went to the town of Erie, and by the lake to Fort Erie. The next march was to Lundy's Lane, where they arrived in time to take part in the battle. During the siege of Fort Erie Davenport was placed on guard duty, and was one of the attacking party which drove the British from their works.
