Alamakee.--The northeast county of Iowa; name of Indian origin.

Appanoose.--One of the southern counties of Iowa; named in honor of the noted chief among the Sacs and Foxes whose village was once situated on the site of the present city of Ottumwa.

Anamosa.--The county seat of Jones county. The name, as applied to the town, originated as follows: About 1842, an Indian man, woman and little girl stopped at the village in Jones county then called Dartmouth. The man's name was Na-si-nus, and he was a chief, or head man among the Winnebagoes. His companions were his wife and daughter. The latter was a handsome, cheerful little girl, then about ten years of age. Some gentlemen present asked the parents what was the name of their daughter, and they replied "An-a-mo-sah" which was interpreted as White
